Some useful questions answered.......
What happens in a treatment ?
A Bowen session will take between 45 mins - 1 hour. Please allow up to 1 1/2 hours for the first treatment, as a detailed discussion will first take place to gather the necessary background information and medical history. A list of any medication you are taking will need to be provided. A brief assessment will then be carried out to indicate areas of imbalance and miss-alignment to enable a more targeted treatment. You will lie down on the treatment couch where a series of gentle and precise moves will be made over connective tissue. The therapy is carried out through a thin layer of loose clothing so there is no need to remove any clothing. Please do not wear jeans or any bulky clothing.
The unique thing about Bowen is the breaks. After a series of moves have been made the therapist then leaves the room for a couple of minutes. For anyone not having experienced this before it may seem a little unusual, but is a key part of Bowen. These 'breaks' allows time for the body to process the information and respond accordingly. This rhythm will continue until treatment is completed.
How many treatments will I need ?
This will vary from person to person and will depend on the condition being addressed. Usually within 2-3 sessions, spaced 7 days apart, a response will be seen and improvement made. Every body is different and some people with more acute problems notice an improvement immediately, where as other more long standing injuries or conditions may take longer i.e. 4-6 sessions. Many people like to come for 'top up' treatments every 4-6 weeks to keep their body in optimum condition or to help manage pain if dealing with a long term chronic condition.
Will the effects of the Bowen Therapy last ?
Bowens 'ace card' is that conditions sucessfully treated will usually not return unless re-injury occurs. Rapid and long lasting results are common and many conditions that have failed to respond to other treatments are often found to respond very well to Bowen.
Can I mix Bowen with other therapies ?
It is strongly advised that you refrain from any other hands on therapies during the period that you are having Bowen treatments. Other therapies can interfere with the potential benefits of Bowen by confusing the bodies response and inhibiting the healing process. Mixing treatments can result in the body becoming overloaded with information and affect the treatment outcome.
Bowen can work effectively and in conjunction with conventional medicine. Many healthcare settings are recognising it and more insurance companies are recognising it as an effective treatment .
Is there any treatment aftercare ?
At the end of a session you will be asked to drink a glass of water. You will then be advised to drink at least 5 glasses per day throughout the week following the treatment. This helps with metabolism of Bowen and aids in the detoxification process it initiates. It is also important to keep mobile after a treatment but do not undergo vigorous excersise in days after treatment.
